This
photograph
shows
the
Lagonda
House
hotel
,
located
at the
northwest
corner
of
High
and
Limestone
streets
in
Springfield
,
Ohio
. The
Lagonda
House
was a
hotel
built
in
1869
by the
Champion
City
Hotel
Company
,
which
was
owned
by a
group
of
prominent
local
citizens
:
William
Whiteley
,
John
Foos
,
J
.
D
.
Stewart
,
David
Thatcher
,
James
S
.
Goode
,
John
W
.
Bookwalter
, and
Charles
H
.
Bacon
. The
lot
on
which
it
sat
was
originally
known
as
Mason
Corner
,
purchased
by
General
Samson
Mason
from
James
Lowry
in
1822
.
Mason
Corner
was
purchased
for
$20,000
and the
140-room
hotel
was
built
at a
cost
of
$130,000
.
It
was
officially
opened
on
September
30
,
1869
and was
managed
by
L
.
W
.
Cooke
&
Sons
. The
hotel
contained
a
billiard
room
,
dining
room
, and
bathrooms
, as
well
as a
cigar
store
and a
Western
Union
telegraph
office
. The
mid-nineteenth
century
was a
time
of
great
expansion
for the
city
of
Springfield
. In
1868
,
when
building
on the
Lagonda
House
was
started
,
250
new
buildings
were
constructed
in the
city
at a
total
cost
of
about
$900,000
. In
1869
,
when
the
Lagonda
House
was
finished
,
188
new
buildings
went
up
at a
cost
of
over
$582,000
. By
1870
, the
city
population
was
12,652
, a
75%
increase
since
1860
.
Lagonda
House
hotel
was
destroyed
by
fire
in
1895
.
One
of the
major
stockholders
,
John
W
.
Bookwalter
,
purchased
the
remaining
shares
of
stock
and
built
the
Bookwalter
Hotel
on the
same
site
. The
Bookwalter
remained
in
business
until
1930
,
when
the
upper
floors
were
converted
into
apartments
. In
1940
, the
building
was
razed
to
make
way
for a
new
F
.
W
.
Woolworth
store
.
Woolworth's
closed
its
doors
on
April
14
,
1974
, and
two
years
later
the
building
was
demolished
. The
corner
later
became
part
of the
city
hall
plaza
. This
photograph
is
from the
book
Springfield
Illustrated
,
which
provides
a
written
and
photographic
profile
of the
city
. The
photographs
include
residences
of
prominent
citizens
,
schools
,
churches
,
businesses
, and
street
views
. The
book
is

pages
and
