Butler
streets
in
Marietta
,
Ohio
.
Cadwallader
,
who
took
photographs
,
ambrotypes
, and
melainotypes
,
operated
a
gallery
in
Marietta
between
1860
and
1887
.
Martha
McClellan
Brown
(1838-1916)
was
born
in
Baltimore
,
Maryland
and
graduated
from the
Pittsburgh
Female
College
in
1862
at the
head
of her
class
.
Brown
began
her
temperance
career
in
1861
when
she
joined
the
Independent
Order
of
Good
Templars
, a
fraternal
organization
modeled
on the
Masons
and
dedicated
to the
cause
of
total
abstinence
and
state
prohibition
. In
1868
, she
took
over
the
editorship
of a
local
weekly
newspaper
in
Alliance
,
Ohio
, the
Monitor
. She and her
husband
,
Reverend
William
K
.
Brown
,
ran
the
paper
until
1878
,
turning
it
into a
temperance
publication
. In
1872
, she was
chosen
grand
chief
templar
of
Ohio
and
held
the
post
for
two
years
. At a
statewide
temperance
rally
in
Columbus
in
February
1874
,
Brown
helped
form
the
Women's
Temperance
Association
of
Ohio
. She
drafted
the
plan
of
work
and the
call
for a
convention
to be
held
in
Cleveland
in
November
1874
. At that
convention
, the
Woman's
Christian
Temperance
Union
was
founded
. In her
later
years
,
Brown
became
active
in the
Prohibition
Party
. In
1876
, she was
named
vice-president
and a
member
of the
platform
committee
at the
national
convention
of the
Prohibition
Party
and
fought
hard
for the
inclusion
of
woman
suffrage
in the
party's
platform
. Her
interests
began
to
shift
to the
academic
sphere
, and in
1882
, she
assumed
the
positions
of
vice
president
and
professor
of
art
,
literature
, and
philosophy
at the
Cincinnati
Wesleyan
Women's
College
.
Brown
became
increasingly
prominent
in
Cincinnati
philanthropic
and
civic
affairs
, and
continued
her
involvement
in the
suffrage
movement
and
women's
club
movement
. She
frequently
lectured
and
wrote
articles
on
temperance
,
education
,
literary
, and
civic
subjects
.
