Description
Colonel
Joseph
McCutchen
established
McCutchenville
on the
Wyandot
and
Seneca
county
borders
in the
1820s
, and
built
the
McCutchen
Overland
Inn
,
shown
here. He was
elected
county
auditor
in
1856
and
later
served
in the
state
legislature
.
McCutchen
also
served
with
distinction
in the
Civil
War
. The
McCutchen
Inn
was the
first
building
in the
town
. The
log
cabin
portion
of the
structure
was
built
in
1829
and was
owned
and
operated
by
McCutchen
until
1845
. The
inn
served
as a
stagecoach
stop
and, from
1829
to
1840
, also
housed
the
post
office
. In
January
1845
,
McCutchen
sold
the
farm
to
Christopher
Pierson
,
who
sold
it
to
John
F
.
Myers
a
few
months
later
.
Myers
and his
family
renamed
the
inn
the
Myers
Hotel
and
operated
it
for
seventy-three
years
. The
hotel
included
fifteen
rooms
, with
five
bedrooms
on the
second
floor
and
two
bedrooms
on the
first
floor
. On the
second
floor
is
a
ballroom
with a
fireplace
and
pump
organ
.
Folding
doors
could
be
shut
to
make
part
of the
ballroom
into a
bedroom
if the
inn
was
crowded
.
One
of the
bedrooms
on the
first
floor
was
kept
available
for those
who
were
unable
to
pay
for their
own
room
and
board
. The
township
reimbursed
the
inn
for
food
and
lodging
for the
poor
. In
1918
the
establishment
was
sold
at
public
auction
to
Hayes
Shireman
,
who
rented
out
the
rooms
as
apartments
for
forty-six
years
. The
Wyandot
County
Historical
Society
purchased
the then
rundown
structure
in
1964
.
It
has been
restored
to what
it
would have
looked
like
in the
1850s
, but the
original
log
cabin
is
still
visible
in the
rear
of the
building
.
