Following
the
construction
of
Huffman
Dam
, the
village
of
Osborn
was
located
in a
flood
basin
. This
photograph
,
taken
in
1921
,
shows
the
process
of
moving
the
village
of
Osborn
from its
location
along
the
Mad
River
to its
new
location
near
Fairfield
,
Ohio
. In
1950
Osborn
merged
with the
village
of
Fairfield
and
is
now
known
as
Fairborn
. This
photograph
measures
10.5
"
x
6.5
"
(26.67
x
16.51
cm)
.
Huffman
Dam
is
an
earthen
embankment
located
across
the
Mad
River
in
northwestern
Greene
County
near
the
City
of
Fairborn
.
Huffman
Dam
Road
goes
across
the
top
of the
dam
,
connecting
State
Route
4
and
State
Route
444
. The
dam
was
built
to
temporarily
store
floodwater
and has
no
gates
or
permanent
pool
.
It
is
3,340
feet
long
and
65
feet
high
and has
three
concrete
conduits
through
the
base
of the
embankment
near
the
south
abutment
. The
conduits
are
sized
to
discharge
a
peak
flow
during
an
Official
Plan
Flood
that
can
be
handled
by the
flood
protection
levees
and
channels
downstream
. The
remainder
of the
floodwaters
are
temporarily
stored
behind
the
dam
and
released
over
time
. An
emergency
spillway
is
located
directly
above
the
conduits
in the
same
structure
.
