During
the
Civil
War
, a
need
for
local
defense
and
order
led
to the
creation
of
organized
units
to
provide
this
protection
. These
local
units
were
called
the "
National
Guard.
" They were
mainly
comprised
of
youths
,
veterans
, and those
exempted
from
Army
service
. The
National
Guard
helped
patrol
Camp
Chase
and
Johnson's
Island
prisoner
of
war
camps
, and also
served
in
local
combat
situations
,
such
as
defense
against
Morgan's
Raiders
.
After
the
Civil
War
, the
Ohio
National
Guard
was
often
used
to
keep
peace
in
times
of
labor
unrest
.
During
World
War
I
, the
Ohio
National
Guard
was
mobilized
and
comprised
the
37th
Division
,
earning
the
nickname
the
Buckeye
Division
. The
Buckeye
Division
earned
fame
in
World
War
I
and was
rated
by the
German
staff
as
one
of the
six
best
American
divisions
for
combat
effectiveness
.
Between
World
War
I
and
World
War
II
, the
Ohio
National
Guard
provided
relief
during
natural
disasters
and
labor
strikes
,
particularly
those in the
coal-mining
regions
of
Ohio
. The
onset
of
World
War
II
again
mobilized
the
Ohio
National
Guard
and the
famed
Buckeye
Division
,
which
fought
in the
Pacific
and
included
seven
Medal
of
Honor
recipients
.
Though
no
Ohio
National
Guard
Unit
was
dispatched
to the
Korea
War
, the
Guard
did
assist
in
training
new
soldiers
for
combat
. Also
during
this
time
the
Air
National
Guard
was
formed
as a
separate
entity
of the
National
Guard
.
Guardsmen
from
both
were
dispatched
to
participate
in the
Vietnam
War
. In
1970
, the
Ohio
National
Guard
faced
one
of the
most
tragic
events
in its
history
.
Called
to
restore
order
during
student
strikes
at
Kent
State
University
in
Kent
Ohio
, the
Guard
found
themselves
in a
hostile
situation
and
four
students
were
killed
.
During
Desert
Storm
,
Guard
units
were
sent
to
Kuwait
and
played
an
important
role
in
enforcing
the
no-fly
zone
over
Iraq
. In
1993
, the
Guard
helped
to
quell
the
Lucasville
Prison
riots
.
