the
Associate
Reformed
Presbyterian
Church
of
Oxford
. In
1834
, a
small
group
of
Associate
Reformed
Presbyterians
joined
together
under
the
leadership
of
Miami
professor
Samuel
W
.
MacCracken
.
Four
years
later
, the
Oxford
Theological
Seminary
opened
.
Classrooms
and
offices
for the
theological
seminary
were
located
on the
first
floor
of the
building
. The
second
floor
had a
sanctuary
for
worship
.
Local
residents
called
the
building
the "
Bank
Church
"
because
worshipers
entered
the
building
using
an
inclined
earthen
bank
that
allowed
them to
reach
the
second
floor
without
passing
through
the
school
on the
ground
floor
. The
seminary
was
moved
in
1857
and the
following
year
the
building
became
the
home
of the
Oxford
United
Presbyterian
Church
.
Members
of the
Associate
Reformed
Presbyterian
Church
lived
in the
Miami
Valley
as
early
as
1794
. By the
early
1800s
, a
concentration
of
Associate
Reformed
had
settled
in
Butler
and
Preble
counties
.
Interested
in
world
missions
and
benevolence
, the
Associate
Reformed
church
tended
to be
more
conservative
than
other
Presbyterian
organizations
.
