Chase
moved
from
Hartford
,
Connecticut
to
Worthington
to
become
the
first
rector
of
St
.
John's
Episcopal
Church
. He also
served
as
head
of the
Worthington
Academy
and was
responsible
for the
parishes
of
Trinity
in
Columbus
and
St
.
Peter's
in
Delaware
,
Ohio
.
Philander
Chase
(1775-1852)
was
born
in
Cornish
,
New
Hampshire
.
Although
raised
in the
Congregational
Church
,
while
studying
at
Dartmouth
College
he
decided
to
join
the
Episcopal
Church
,
which
split
from the
Church
of
England
during
the
American
Revolution
.
Chase
spent
much
of his
career
expanding
the
denomination's
reach
in
frontier
areas
,
first
in
Louisiana
, then
Ohio
,
Michigan
, and
Illinois
. In
1818
he was
appointed
bishop
of the
newly-created
Diocese
of
Ohio
.
Chase
was also a
leader
in
education
,
founding
two
Episcopal
seminaries
,
Kenyon
College
in
Gambier
,
Ohio
and
Jubilee
College
in
Illinois
. His
nephew
,
Salmon
P
.
Chase
(1808-1873)
,
served
as
U.S
.
Senator
,
Ohio
governor
,
secretary
of the
treasury
, and
chief
justice
of the
supreme
court
.
