Onyx
, or
silver
inlay
,
glass
was
unique
to
Dalzell
,
Gilmore
&
Leighton
Glass
Co
. and
is
the
most
recognizable
,
collectible
and
valuable
of
all
Findlay
glass
.
Onyx
was
only
produced
for a
year
,
between
1888
and
1889
.
Because
of
it's
brittle
nature
,
production
was
stopped
early
on.
Onyx
is
rare
because
the
process
to
make
it
created
a
very
brittle
product
. The
breakage
percentage
was
so
high
in
shipping
that
it
almost
bankrupted
the
company
.
It
was the
design
and
production
of the
new
Priscilla
pattern
glass
,
which
proved
to be
extremely
popular
,
which
put
the
company
back
on its
feet
.
Findlay
experienced
a
natural
gas
boom
in the
late
1880s
and
1890s
. The
appeal
of
free
or
very
expensive
fuel
attracted
many
manufacturers
to the
city
,
including
a
number
of
glass
tableware
companies
.
Dalzell
,
Gilmore
&
Leighton
Co
. was
one
of
five
glass
factories
that
produced
tableware
in
Findlay
,
Ohio
from
1886-1902
. The
others
were
Bellaire
Goblet
Co.
,
Columbia
Glass
Co.
,
Model
Flint
Glass
Co
. and
Findlay
Flint
Glass
Co
.
Dalzell
,
Gilmore
&
Leighton
moved
to
Findlay
from
Brillant
,
Ohio
in
1888
and
opened
September
6th
.
It
was
Findlay's
longest
surviving
pattern
glass
factory
. The
Dalzell
works
produced
glass
from
1888
until
1902
, and
finally
closed
in
1903
.
Many
patterns
,
shapes
and
colors
were
produced
at
Dalzell
,
including
the
now
famous
Findlay
Onyx
.
Shapes
produced
for
Onyx
were:
Bowl
,
Butter
Dish
,
Tall
Celery
,
Creamer
,
Cruet
,
Lamp
,
Pickle
Castor
,
Pitcher
,
Salt
and
Pepper
Shakers
,
Sauce
,
Spooner
,
Sugar
Shaker
,
Syrup
,
Toothpick
Holder
,
Tumbler
,
Covered
Sugar
.
Onyx
is
usually
a
yellowish
white
opaque
glass
with
raised
silver
daisy
decorations
.
Rare
pieces
were
made
of
rose
,
amber
,
orange
, or
purple
glass
.
