important
figure
in the
founding
of
Ohio
.
Born
in
Massachusetts
,
Putnam
served
in
both
the
French
and
Indian
War
and the
American
Revolution
. He was
one
of the
officers
responsible
for the
Newburgh
Petition
,
which
called
for
Continental
Army
officers
to
receive
bounty
lands
in
Ohio
Country
. In
1786
,
Putnam
and
Benjamin
Tupper
formed
the
Ohio
Company
of
Associates
, a
joint
stock
company
comprised
largely
of
Revolutionary
War
veterans
wishing
to
move
west
. The
following
year
, the
company
contracted
with
Congress
for
1.5
million
acres
in
southeastern
Ohio
. As
superintendent
of the
company
,
Putnam
oversaw
the
construction
of the
stockade
Campus
Martius
and
laid
out
a
plan
for the
town
of
Marietta
.
Putnam's
acquaintance
with
George
Washington
during
the
Revolution
led
to
several
federal
appointments
,
including
territorial
judge
,
brigadier
general
in the
regular
army
, and
surveyor
general
of the
U
.
S
. In
1802
,
Putnam
served
as a
delegate
to the
Ohio
Constitutional
Convention
,
even
though
he
preferred
delaying
statehood
until
the
region
was
more
developed
.
Putnam
remained
committed
to the
growth
of
Marietta
and was
involved
in the
founding
of
Ohio
University
. The
portrait
is
attributed
to
Sala
Bosworth
(1805-1890)
.
It
is
based
on an
earlier
silhouette
of
Putnam
.
Bosworth
, a
native
of
Massachusetts
,
came
to
Ohio
with his
family
at
age
eleven
. He had
some
training
at the
Pennsylvania
Academy
of
Fine
Arts
and
worked
as a
traveling
painter
in
southern
Ohio
,
where
he
created
landscapes
,
portraits
, and
historical
scenes
.
Bosworth
held
several
civic
posts
in
Washington
County
,
including
county
auditor
and
postmaster
at
Marietta
.
