Schacht
Auto-Runabout
, as
it
was
known
in
advertisements
,
dates
from
1910
. The
motor
is
a
double-opposed
18-20
horsepower
horizontal
four-cycle
type
and
can
reach
a
speed
of
thirty
miles
an
hour
(48.28
km/hr)
.
It
has a
wheelbase
of
seventy-four
inches
(1.87
m)
and a
road
clearance
of
seventeen
inches
(43.18
cm)
. The
automobile
weighs
1,200
pounds
(544.31
kg)
and
can
carry
a
gasoline
supply
of
eight
gallons
(30.28
liters)
.
It
has a
Corning-style
body
and a
King
of
Belgian
seat
, and the
trimming
is
buffed
leather
with
curled-hair
filling
. The
Schacht
Motor
Car
Company
(known
as the
Schacht
Manufacturing
Company
prior
to
1910)
of
Cincinnati
,
Ohio
,
produced
"
high-wheelers
" or
automobiles
that had
carriage-like
wheels
and
bodies
.
Schacht
was a
buggy
producer
that
started
a
sideline
business
of
producing
automobile
components
shortly
after
the
turn
of the
twentieth
century
.
Schacht's
first
automobile
was a
two-cylinder
ten-horsepower
runabout
in
1904
.
All
Schachts
were
water-cooled
and
wheel-steered
.
Later
cars
also had
four-cylinder
engines
, but
outgrew
their
buggy
appearance
and were
offered
with
either
pneumatic
or
solid
rubber
tires
. In
1913
Schacht
ended
the
production
of
motorcars
and
focused
on the
manufacture
of
trucks
. The
company
changed
its
name
to the
Schacht
Motor
Truck
Company
in
1915
and
continued
in
business
until
the
late
1930s
. The
business
was
located
on
Spring
Grove
Avenue
until
1926
,
when
it
moved
to
8th
Street
.
