wagon
.
Both
men
had
sons
that
founded
internationally
successful
businesses
,
Studebaker
Company
of
South
Bend
,
Indiana
(automobile
manufacturers)
and
F.E
.
Myers
and
Brothers
Company
of
Ashland
,
Ohio
(manufacturers
of
pumps
and
farming
equipment)
.
John
Clement
Studebaker
, a
blacksmith
and
wagon
maker
from
Lancaster
,
Pennsylvania
,
immigrated
to
Ashland
,
Ohio
in
1836
, and
worked
as a
miller
. By the
1850s
,
Studebaker
was
deep
in
debt
. His
generosity
towards
those in
need
and
failure
to
collect
debts
caused
him to
lose
the
family
farm
. In
1851
, the
Studebakers
moved
west
again
, this
time
to
South
Bend
,
Indiana
,
where
John's
sons
Henry
and
Clement
Studebaker
started
the
Studebaker
Manufacturing
Company
in
1868
. By the
1880s
they were the
largest
wagon
manufacturers
in the
world
, and in the
twentieth
century
they
became
one
of the
few
wagon
companies
to
successfully
switch
to
manufacturing
automobiles
. In
1870
, the
Myers
brothers
established
a
farm
implement
business
. They then
engineered
and
manufactured
the
first
double-acting
hand
pump
,
which
delivered
water
on
both
the
up
and
down
strokes
. From this
modest
beginning
, the
Myers
pump
line
grew
and
evolved
to
include
wastewater
removal
and
industrial
pumps
and
systems
. In
1960
the
Myers
family
sold
the
business
, but
it
still
remains
in
Ashland
under
the
Myers
name
. The
Myers
family
donated
money
for the
Myers
Band
Shell
,
Myers
Hall
on the
Ashland
University
Campus
, and the
John
C
.
Myers
Convocation
Center
.
