Whitney

1908
. The
72nd
O.V.I
.
held
reunions
annually
beginning
in
1870
. The
veterans
displayed
a
portrait
of
General
Ralph
Buckland
,
who
died
in
1892
,
when
they
posed
for this
group
photograph
. The
photograph
was
taken
at the
home
of
Charles
and
Anne
Kent
Buckland
Dillon
,
one
of
General
Buckland's
eight
children
.
Buckland
built
this
residence
for the
couple
at
1329
Buckland
Avenue
in
Fremont
,
Ohio
, in
1873
. The
Rutherford
B
.
Hayes
Presidential
Center
purchased
the
Dillon
House
in
1962
. The
photograph
measures
8.5
"
x
6.5
"
(21.59
x
16.51
cm)
. The
72nd
O.V.I
. was
primarily
recruited
in
Sandusky
County
,
Ohio
, but
men
from
Erie
,
Seneca
,
Wood
,
Ottawa
, and
Medina
counties
also
enlisted
in the
regiment
.
It
was
organized
by
Fremont
,
Ohio
attorney
Ralph
P
.
Buckland
during
the
months
of
October
,
November
, and
December
of
1861
.
It
left
Fremont
in
January
1862
, with
approximately
900
men
. The
regiment
saw
its
first
combat
action
at the
Battle
of
Shiloh
. The
72nd
became
part
of the
Army
of the
Tennessee
and
participated
in the
Vicksburg
Campaign
, the
Siege
of
Vicksburg
, and the
Battle
of
Nashville
.
Two-thirds
of the
regiment
were
captured
at the
Battle
of
Guntown
, and
more
than
100
of the
captured
soldiers
died
during
imprisonment
at
Andersonville
.
Buckland
resigned
his
commission
in
early
1865
to
accept
a
seat
in the
United
States
House
of
Representatives
,
where
he
served
two
terms
. In
February
1865
the
72nd
O.V.I
.
joined
the
Department
of the
Gulf
and
served
in
Louisiana
and
Mississippi
.
It
mustered
out
at
Vicksburg
on
September
11
,
1865
.
