This
photograph
depicts
the
Wyandot
Mission
Church
in
present-day
Upper
Sandusky
,
Ohio
after
its
restoration
in
1889
. The
church
was
built
in
1824
as a
Methodist
mission
to the
Wyandot
Indians
. This
image
was
published
in
Picturesque
Northwestern
Ohio
and
Battle
Grounds
of the
Maumee
Valley
: An
Art
and
Historical
Work
of the
Northwest
Section
of the
Buckeye
State
in
1901
. The
book
measures
11
"
x
14
"
(27.9
cm
x
35.56
cm)
.
John
Stewart
established
the
mission
in
1816
, and the
Methodist
Episcopal
Church
officially
formed
a
Missionary
Society
to
support
Stewart
in
1819
.
Stewart
,
who
was of
mixed
black
and
white
ancestry
,
converted
to
Methodism
at a
camp
meeting
in
Marietta
and was
inspired
to
preach
. He was
forced
to
retire
early
due
to
health
problems
and
died
in
1823
.
Circuit
rider
Reverend
James
B
.
Finley
(1781-1856)
continued
Stewart's
work
.
Finley
traveled
to
Washington
to
ask
Congress
for
government
funds
to
build
the
church
. The
church
was
built
out
of
limestone
for
just
over
$1000
.
It
was
dedicated
in
1824
. With the
help
of
Wyandot
leaders
Between-the
Logs
and
Mononcue
,
Finley
ran
a
school
,
store
, and
farm
in
addition
to the
church
.
Fifty
children
attended
the
school
before
Finley
left
his
position
due
to
poor
health
. He
spent
six
years
(1821-1827)
among
the
Wyandots
, and
published
several
accounts
of his
experience
,
including
Life
Among
the
Indians
. The
Wyandot
Indians
worshipped
at the
church
until
their
removal
in
1843
.
White
settlers
used
the
church
until
1847.This
building
is
listed
on the
National
Register
of
Historic
Places
.
