This
marble
bust
portrait
of
Alphonso
Taft
was
carved
by
Hiram
Powers
in
1869
,
when
Taft
and his
wife
vacationed
in
Europe
with their
children
.
Taft's
facial
features
are
vividly
lifelike
, a
quality
achieved
by
Powers's
attention
to
detail
. The
bust
measures
24.38
"
x
16.38
"
x

"

x

x

cm)
.
Alphonso
Taft
(1810-1891)
was
born
in
Vermont
. In
1839
,
soon
after
he
graduated
from
Yale
Law
School
, he
left
for
Cincinnati
,
eventually
to
become
one
of its
most
illustrious
citizens
. He
served
as a
judge
of the
superior
court
of
Ohio
, as
secretary
of
war
and
attorney
general
in
Ulysses
S
.
Grant's
cabinet
, and then as
minister
to
Austria
and
Russia
under
President
Chester
Arthur
. The
patriarch
of the
Cincinnati
Tafts
, he
fathered
six
children
and
saw
four
of his
five
sons
become
lawyers
,
including
Charles
Phelps
Taft
(1843-1929)
and
William
Howard
Taft
(1857-1930)
, the
twenty-seventh
president
of the
United
States
.
Born
and
raised
in
Woodstock
,
Vermont
,
Hiram
Powers
(1805-1873)
moved
with his
family
to
Cincinnati
at the
age
of
13
. He then
came
to the
attention
of
Cincinnati
art
patron
Nicholas
Longworth
,
who
owned
and
lived
in
Belmont
(now
the
Taft
Museum
of
Art)
during
the
mid-nineteenth
century
. His
marble
sculpture
The
Greek
Slave
won
grand
prize
at the
Western
Art
Union
art
show
in
Cincinnati
in
1850
and
is
considered
one
of the
best
American
marble
sculptures
of the
nineteenth
century
.
