Two
years
later
his
parents
freed
their
slaves
and
moved
to
Chillicothe
.
Thurman
practiced
law
in
Chillicothe
and in
1844
became
the
youngest
member
of the
U.S
.
House
of
Representatives
. A
Democrat
, he
favored
his
party's
support
of the
Mexican
War
.
Thurman
supported
the
unsuccessful
Wilmot
Proviso
,
which
would have
forbidden
slavery
in the
territory
gained
from
Mexico
. In
1851
he was
appointed
to the
Ohio
Supreme
Court
, on
which
he
served
until
1856
.
Running
for
governor
in
1867
as an
opponent
of
black
male
suffrage
,
Thurman
lost
narrowly
to
Rutherford
B
.
Hayes
. The
following
year
he was
elected
to the
U
.
S
.
Senate
,
where
he was a
vocal
opponent
of
Republican
Reconstruction
policies
. He
played
an
active
role
in
creating
the
commission
to
resolve
the
contested
election
of
1876
.
Thurman
was
Senate
president
pro
tempore
from
1879-1881
.
Grover
Cleveland
chose
Thurman
as his
vice
presidential
candidate
during
his
unsuccessful
bid
for
re-election
in
1888
. The
portrait
was
painted
by
Freeman
Thorpe
(1844-1922)
,
who
was
born
in
Geneva
,
Ohio
.
Thorpe
was a
prominent
painter
and
photographer
who
spent
part
of
each
year
in
Washington
D.C
.
creating
portraits
of
political
and
military
figures
.
