(1810-1891)

Townshend
,
Vermont
. He

supporter
of the
emerging
railroad
system
.
George
Washington
Williams
,
who
became
the
first
African
American
elected
to the
Ohio
House
of
Representatives
,
read
law
in
Taft's
office
.
Taft
served
several
terms
as a
judge
in
Hamilton
County
. His
most
important
case
involved
Bible
reading
in the
public
schools
. In
1869
, the
Cincinnati
Board
of
Education
adopted
a
resolution
prohibiting
the
practice
. The
King
James
version
was
commonly
used
,

argued

First

religiously
neutral

Equality
in the
enjoyment
of
religious
liberty
and the
faithful
preservation
of the
rights
of
individual
conscience
is
important
in
itself
, and
is
essential
to
religious
peace
and
temporal
prosperity
in any
country
with a
free
government
" he
wrote
in his
dissenting
opinion
.
Three
years
later
the
Ohio
Supreme
Court
unanimously
overturned
the
lower
court
ruling
and
upheld
Taft's
opinion
. This
controversial
decision
cost
Taft
the
Republican
nomination
for
governor
in
1875
and
1879
. His
reputation
remained
strong
among
the
national
Republican
leadership
.
Taft

appointed
to

of
war
and
attorney
general
in
Grant's
cabinet
after
the
men

removed
for
corruption
.
