Description
This
bronze
sculpture
of an
Abyssinian
lion
,
Panthera
leo
roosevelti
, was
created
by
Eli
Harvey
in
Paris
in
1899
.
It
measures
10
" by
14
"
(25.4
by
35.56
cm)
. The
name
of the
large
cat
derives
from its
native
country
,
Ethiopia
,
formerly
called
Abyssinia
.
Eli
Harvey
(1860-1957)
was
born
in
Clinton
County
,
Ohio
. In
spite
of his
Quaker
heritage
,
which
regarded
art
as "
vanity
and
vexation
of
spirit
" he
began
creating
portraits
of
local
residents
to
finance
his
artistic
training
in
Cincinnati
. He
attended
McMicken
University
and
later
studied
in
Europe
. He
painted
until
the
early
1900s
,
when
he
turned
his
attention
to
sculpture
. In
1901
, he
received
a
commission
to
complete
lion
sculptures
for the
New
York
Zoological
Park
. His
cat
sculptures
became
well
known
around
the
country
.
Among
his
best-known
commissions
are a
bull
elk
,
which
served
as a
symbol
for the
International
Order
of the
Elks
,
Brown
University's
Brown
Bear
, and a
bull
for the
J
.
C
.
Penney
Company
.
Harvey
made
a
complete
study
of an
animal's
anatomy
before
beginning
his
sculpture
. He
began
by
modeling
the
bones
and
muscles
of the
animal
before
creating
the
outer
appearance
.
