Description
"
Fountain
Square
Pantomime
"
is
the
most
ambitious
painting
by
Cincinnati
artist
Joseph
Henry
Sharp
. The
40
"

"
(101.6
x

cm)
composition
represents
a
unique
record
of the
lively
street
life
and
artistic
climate
of
1890s
Cincinnati
.
Sharp
was
commissioned
in
1892
to
make
this
painting
for the
Mabley
and
Carew
Department
Store
in
downtown
Cincinnati
. The
painting
shows
a
crowd
gathered
to
watch
one
of the
pantomime
performances
,
often
of
Mother
Goose
rhymes
and
fairy
tales
,
produced
at
Christmastime
on the
store's
second-floor
balcony
to
attract
customers
.
Cincinnati
painter
John
Rettig
,
known
for his
designs
for
theater
sets
and
city
pageants
,
staged
the
performances
.
Delighted
throngs
of
children
and their
parents
packed
Fountain
Square
to
see
them.
Among
the
faces
in the
crowd
Sharp
included
Rettig's
portrait
along
with those of his
own
fiance
,
Addie
Byrum
, and
local
painters
Leon
Van
Loo
,
Leis
Henry
Meakin
, and
Lewis
Lutz
. He
may
have
included
himself
as
well
as the
architect
of the
Cincinnati
Art
Museum
,
James
McLaughlin
. "
Turtle
Joe
" of the
Tyler
Davidson
Fountain
locates
the
scene
. Here,
Sharp
has
expressed
a
remarkable
sense
of the
crowd's
enrapture
.
Moreover
, the
claustrophobic
composition
effectively
suggests
the
close
proximity
of
people
from
various
walks
of
life
in
urban
settings
. With its
assembly
of
artist
friends
and
smart-alecky
ruffians
, the
painting
radiates
Sharp's
tremendous
pleasure
in
painting
it
and his
enjoyment
of the
city's
vitality
.
Joseph
Henry
Sharp
(1859-1953)
studied
at the
McMicken
School
of
Design
, and in
1886
embarked
upon
an
important
period
of
study
in
Munich
and
Paris
. He
returned
to
Cincinnati
in
1889
to
find
a
livelier
art
scene
than had
existed
when
he
left
. He
quickly
became
a
central
figure
in the
city's
artistic
community
. In
1890
he was a
founding
member
of the
Cincinnati
Art
Club
, and in
1892
, the
year
he
painted
this
work
, he
began
a
four-year
stint
as
instructor
of the
life
drawing
class
at the
Art
Academy
of
Cincinnati
.
Sharp
is
known
for his
colorful
portraits
and
genre
paintings
of
American
Indians
.
