Description
This
photograph
of the
Clark
County
Memorial
Building
,
located
on the
northwest
corner
of
Main
Street
and
Lowry
Avenue
, was
taken
in
1927
.
Memorial
Hall
, as this
building
is
more
commonly
called
, was
completed
on
June
1
,
1916
.
Springfield
needed
an
auditorium
that
could
accommodate
large
audiences
.
It
was
paid
for
through
taxation
and the
sale
of
bonds
. The
hall
commemorates
Clark
County's
soldiers
,
sailors
, and
marines
, as
well
as the
area
pioneers
. The
seating
capacity
is
2,700
and
it
has
served
as
venue
for
concerts
,
trade
shows
,
sporting
events
,
graduations
,
political
gatherings
,
balls
, and
meetings
.
Miss
Leona
Yeazell
served
as the
building's
first
manager
. In
1918
Memorial
Hall
housed
the
Clark
Country
Court
and
several
county
offices
after
the
February
26
courthouse
fire
. From
1926
to
1985
the
hall
also
served
as
home
to the
Clark
County
Historical
Society
. The
building's
deteriorating
condition
forced
its
closure
on
September
1
,
1985
. In the
mid-1980s
, a
proposed
tax
levy
for
renovation
of the
building
was
defeated
by
voters
,
so
the
hall
remained
empty
at the
end
of the
twentieth
century
. This
