Place
Springfield (Ohio)
Clark County (Ohio)
Description
This
photograph
shows
Clark
County's
third
courthouse
,
located
on the
northwest
corner
of
Columbia
and
Limestone
streets
in
Springfield
,
Ohio
.
Construction
on the
county's
first
courthouse
began
in
1819
, but
due
to
various
delays
it
was not
ready
for
occupancy
until
1822
.
It
took
another
6
years
before
construction
was
fully
completed
with the
installation
of a
bell
in the
steeple
in
October
,
1828
. For
60
years
this
building
was not
only
the
courthouse
, but also a
place
to
attend
lectures
,
conventions
, and "
magic-lantern
"
exhibitions
(slide
shows)
. In
1878
it
was
sold
to
Judge
J
.
H
.
Littler
for
$50
and then
dismantled
.
Construction
on the
new
courthouse
,
pictured
here,
began
that
same
year
on the
same
site
.
Completed
in
only
3
years
, the
new
structure
was
built
in the
Romanesque
style
with
three
stories
and a
clock
tower
,
numerous
arched
windows
, and
various
elevations
.
Disaster
struck
the
building
on
March
12
,
1918
,
when
a
fire
broke
out
on the
second
floor
.
Within
hours
the
entire
building
was
engulfed
in
flames
and was
virtually
gutted
. The
walls
remained
intact
,
so
a
major
renovation
was
started
in
1922
. The
arched
windows
were
made
rectangular
, the
clock
tower
was
replaced
by a
dome
, and the
front
stairs
were
removed
to
create
a
street-level
entrance
. The
new
structure
,
which
was
used
as
Clark
County's
courthouse
into the
twentieth
century
,
shares
the
same
basic
structure
as the
1878
building
. This
photograph
is
from the
book
Springfield
Illustrated
,
which
provides
a
written
and
photographic
profile
of the
city
. The
photographs
include
residences
of
prominent
citizens
,
schools
,
churches
,
businesses
, and
street
views
. The
book
is
74
pages
and
measures
9
"
x
12.75
"
(22.86
x
32.39
cm)
.
