Description
This
photograph
shows
the
amphitheater
at the
Clark
County
Fairgrounds
,
located
on the
west
side
of
Yellow
Springs
Street
between
Pleasant
and
Dibert
avenues
in
Springfield
,
Ohio
. On
January
25
,
1840
a
citizens
'
meeting
was
held
at the
courthouse
to
organize
a
county
agricultural
society
.
According
to
society
records
,
annual
fairs
were
held
in
1841
and
1842
, but then
no
events
are
recorded
until
1853
. In this
year
a
new
agricultural
society
was
formed
and
ten
acres
of
land
were
acquired
from
William
Huntington
.
Additional
parcels
were
purchased
over
several
years
resulting
in
46
acres
of
grounds
,
which
were
used
not
only
for the
annual
fair
, but also for
camp
meetings
,
militia
encampments
,
reunions
, and
other
events
. In
1876
the
county
commissioners
bought
the
grounds
from the
agricultural
society
,
making
it
county
property
.
Buildings
constructed
on the
grounds
included
the
racetrack
,
amphitheater
,
stables
, and
shelter
facilities
. The
Clark
County
Fairgrounds
hosted
the
Ohio
State
Fair
in
1870
and
1871
. The
annual
county
fairs
continued
in the
same
location
through
1921
. They were
discontinued
after
1921
, but were
re-established
in
1948
at the
new
fairgrounds
east
of the
city
. The
old
fairground
is
now
the
site
of
Davey
Moore
Park
,
named
after
the
Springfield
boxer
who
held
the
world
featherweight
title
from
1959-1963
.
Moore
died
on
March
25th
from
injuries
sustained
in the
ring
while
trying
to
defend
his
title
for the
sixth
time
. This
photograph
is
from the
book
Springfield
Illustrated
,
which
provides
a
written
and
photographic
profile
of the
city
. The
photographs
include
residences
of
prominent
citizens
,
schools
,
churches
,
businesses
, and
street
views
. The
book
is
74
pages
and
