. The
case
is
leather
and

Crile
Sr
.
is
credited
with
performing
the
first
successful
human
blood
transfusion
at
Cleveland's
St
.
Alexis
Hospital
in
1906
. He also
devised
methods
of
transfusion
and
pioneered
its
use
in
surgery
.
Crile
worked
with
George
H
.
Ketteringham
to
design
the
cannula
. In
Hemorrhage
and
Transfusion
(1909)
,
Crile
analyzed
the
physiological
effects
of
acute
hermorrhage
and
described
several
modes
of
treatment
,
including
blood
transfusion
. He
provided
detailed
instruction
for
transfusing
directly
from
donor
to
recipient
,
connecting
their
blood
vessels
by
means
of his
cannula
for
anastomosis
(the
surgical
process
of
connecting
different
or
severed
veins)
.

.
(1864-1943)
was
born
in
Chili
,
Ohio
. He
received
his
A.B
.
degree
from
Ohio
Northern
University
(1885)
, his
medical
degree
from
Wooster
Medical
College
(1887)
, and
additional
training
in
Europe
.
Crile
worked
in
military
hospitals
in
both
the
Spanish-American
War
and
World
War
I
. He was
one
of the
founders
of the
Cleveland
Clinic
Foundation
and
served
as
both
president
(1921-1940)
and
trustee
(1921-1936)
.
George
H
.
Ketteringham
(1876-1954)
was
born
in
England
and
settled
in
Cleveland
with his
family
in
1881
. He
began
his
career
in
1896
as an
apprentice
at the
J
.
C
.
Ulmer
Co.
,
where
he
became
an
expert
in the
manufacturing
of
surveying
and
other
precision
instruments
. In
addition
to his
work
with the
Cleveland
Clinc
Foundation
,
Ketteringham
also
played
a
role
in the
development
of
periscopes
used
in
submarine
warfare
during
World
War
I
. He
joined
the
Brush
Development
Corp
. at the
start
of
World
War
II
and
remained
associated
with
Brush
until
his
death
.
