Dallas
Billington
(at
the
microphone
right)
and
George
Leonard
of the
Firestone
Bank
. In the
early
twentieth
century
,
Akron's
rubber
industry
attracted
many
workers
from the
South
.
One
young
man
from
Kentucky
,
Dallas
Billington
,
came
seeking
employment
and
found
a
job
driving
a
fork-lift
for
Goodyear
.
Billington
, a
Baptist
,
found
Akron
to be "the
wickedest
place
this
side
of
hell
" and
vowed
to
start
a
church
. He
began
his
ministry
by
preaching
at the
Furnace
Street
Mission
. In
1934
the
Akron
Baptist
Temple
was
officially
established
when
Reverend
Billington
preached
a
sermon
to
13
people
at
Rimer
Elementary
School
, the
first
home
of the
Akron
Baptist
Temple
.
Two
years
later
membership
had
increased
to
1,000
and
construction
began
on what would
become
the
first
of
four
churches
built
to
accommodate
the
growing
congregation
. The
majority
of
church
members
were
transplanted
Southerners
. The
Akron
Baptist
Temple
became
one
of the
largest
Baptist
churches
in the
country
and
expanded
its
influence
by
way
of
weekly
radio
broadcasts
of
Reverend
Billington's
sermons
.
Reverend
Billington
died
in
1972
, and his
ministry
was
assumed
by his
only
son
,
Charles
Billington
. In
1996
the
Reverend
Charles
Billington
retired
and
passed
the
torch
to his
son
,
Dallas
R
.
Billington
. In
2002
Akron
Baptist
Temple
served
approximately
4,000
members
from a
new
sanctuary
built
in
1984
.
