. The
Dayton
YMCA
was
only
the
fourth
YMCA
in the
country
to
offer
educational
courses
of
study
. Its
educational
department
evolved
into
Sinclair
Community
College
.
David
Sinclair
(1850-1902)
was
born
in
Scotland
and
moved
to
Hamilton
,
Ontario
,
Canada
in the
mid-1850s
with his
family
. As the
oldest
of
five
children
,
Sinclair
was
forced
to
leave
school
at the
age
of
twelve
to
help
support
the
family
. He
did
odd
jobs
for a
few
years
until
he
apprenticed
as a
baker
. He
enjoyed
spending
time
at the
YMCA
in
Hamilton
and was
ultimately
offered
a
managerial
position
there as
secretary
. In
1874
,
Sinclair
attended
a
convention
of
YMCA
professionals
in
Dayton
and
so
impressed
his
hosts
that they
offered
him a
job
at a
salary
of
$1,000
a
year
. He
relocated
to
Dayton
,
where
he
spent
the
rest
of his
life
. He
married
Margaret
Cline
of
Hamilton
, and they had
two
daughters
.
