Marion (Ohio)
Marion County (Ohio)
Description
This
seed
corn
bag
measures
approximately
14
" by
35
"
(35.6
by
88.9
cm)
and was
produced
by the
Davidson
Hybrid
Seed
Corn
Company
.
Prior
to
1933
,
Ohio
farmers
selected
seed
corn
from their
own
corn
cribs
.
Large
ears
were
preferred
to
increase
yields
and
save
labor
at
harvest
time
,
when
the
ears
were
husked
by
hand
.
Foster
Davidson
of
Grand
Prairie
Township
,
Marion
County
, was a
progressive
farmer
who
recognized
the
benefits
of
hybridization
for
increasing
corn
yields
. He was a
member
of the
fourth
class
of
Ohio
farmers
who
learned
to
produce
hybrid
seed
corn
,
completing
his
training
in
1936
.
Davidson
,
Homer
Heller
(LaRue)
, and
Homer
Kyle
(Tully
Township)
established
the
Marion
County
Seed
Producers
Association
.
Members
traded
seeds
so
that
each
individual
did
not have to
produce
as
many
varieties
.
Hybrid
seed
corn
was
produced
under
stringent
rules
regulating
the
plants
'
exposure
to
pollen
,
seed
collection
, and
seed
drying
,
insuring
that the
final
product
gave
the
farmer
the
intended
results--stronger
plants
and
greater
per
acre
yields
. In the
early
years
of
hybrid
seed
corn
production
,
Marion
County
farmers
were
skeptical
about
its
productiveness
.
Most
objected
to the
cost
,
which
was
four
to
ten
times
the
cost
of
seed
selected
from the
farmer's
own
corn
crib
.
Each
year
,
however
,
farmers
observed
the
hybrid
fields
and
became
persuaded
that they
yielded
a
better
product
.
Due
to the
planting
of
hybrid
seed
corn
,
average
yields
have
increased
from
about
25
bushels
per
acre
in
1933
to
nearly
150
bushels
per
acre
in
1999
.
Date of Original
1945
