Wright
Brothers
later
published
Dunbar's
Tattler
,
Dayton's
first
African-American
newspaper
.
Orville
Wright
never
received
a
high
school
diploma
. His
father
, a
minister
in the
Church
of the
United
Brethren
in
Christ
,
moved
the
family
to
Iowa
and
Indiana
before
settling
in
Dayton
.
Wilbur
Wright
was
born
in
Indiana
in
1867
, but his
younger
brother
Orville
was
born
at the
family's
new
home
on
7
Hawthorne
Street
on
August
19
,
1871
.
Although
Orville
and
Wilbur
studied
books
in their
father's
library
and
often
read
scientific
books
,
neither
of them
graduated
from
high
school
.
Instead
, they
began
a
printing
shop
in
1890
and a
bicycle
shop
in
1892
.
Reading
awakened
their
interest
in
flight
, and they
began
working
on a
series
of
gliders
. On
December
17
,
1903
, they
became
the
first
to
fly
a
heavier-than-air
craft
.
Paul
Laurence
Dunbar
, the
son
of
former
slaves
, was
one
of the
first
African-Americans
in the
United
States
to be
recognized
as a
poet
.
While
a
student
at
Central
High
School
in
Dayton
,
Dunbar
was the
only
African-American
in his
class
.
Nonetheless
, he was
president
of the
literary
society
,
editor
of the
school
newspaper
, and a
member
of the
debating
club
.
Along
with the
Wright
Brothers
,
Dunbar
published
one
of the
first
African-American
newspapers
in
Dayton
, The
Tattler
.
Oak
and
Ivy
,
Dunbar's
first
collection
of
poems
, was
published
in
1892
. At the
1893
World's
Fair
,
Frederick
Douglas
heard
Dunbar
recite
one
of his
poems
, and
called
him "the
most
promising
young
colored
man
in
America.
"
Dunbar
went
on to
receive
critical
acclaim
for his
other
works
,
including
Lyrics
of a
Lowly
Life
,
Majors
and
Minors
,
ten
other
books
of
poetry
,
four
books
of
short
stories
,
five
novels
, and a
play
.
Dunbar
died
of
tuberculosis
on
February
9
,
1906
. This
photograph
is
part
of
Wright
State
University's
Wright
Brothers
Collection
of
approximately
6000
items
,
including
over
200

books
,
journals
, and
pamphlets
accumulated
by the
Wright
Brothers
,
over
500
items
related
to their
research
,
business
, and
legal
endeavors
,
more
than
1,000
genealogical
items
gathered
by
Bishop
Milton
Wright
and
Orville
Wright
,
nearly
3,600
photographs
, and
over
700
items
representing
awards
and
other
memorabilia
. A
