Description
In the
late
Devonian
Period
, also
known
as the "
Age
of
Fishes
" a
monstrous
"
terrible
fish
"
named
Dunkleosteus
terrelli
prowled
the
seas
covering
what
is
now
northeast
Ohio
. The
now
extinct
Dunkleosteus
was a
massive
armored
fish
reaching
16
feet
or
more
in
length
and
probably
approaching
a
weight
of
two
tons
.
Named
in
honor
of
Dr
.
David
Dunkle
, a
former
curator
at The
Cleveland
Museum
of
Natural
History
,
Dunkleosteus
was the
largest
and
best
known
of
early
marine
carnivores
belonging
to an
extinct
group
called
dinichthyids
, or "
terrible
fishes.
" This
specimen
,
measuring
4
'
8
"
long
(1.18
meters)
, was
found
at
Beaver
Creek
near
Amherst
,
Ohio
by
Peter
Bungart
and
Frank
Shepard
on
August
3
,
1931
.
During
the
late
Devonian
period
(350
million
years
ago)
, the
North
American
continent
was on the
equator
and was
covered
by
shallow
tropical
seas
.
Streams
washing
down
the
western
flanks
of the
recently
formed
Appalachian
Mountains
were
building
a
series
of
deltas
along
the
seas
'
eastern
edge
,
while
offshore
in the
deeper
waters
to the
west
black
muds
rich
with
organic
material
were
accumulating
. These
black
muds
became
Cleveland
Shale
.
Fossil
remains
in the
rock
preserve
evidence
of
sea
life
.
Shallow
by the
standards
of
today's
seas
, these
waters
had
two
layers
or
strata
. The
lower
"
dead
zone
" had
little
oxygen
and was
therefore
devoid
of
life
. An
upper
aerated
zone
,
which
had
more
oxygen
,
teemed
with
swimming
and
floating
life
forms
,
such
as the
Dunkleosteus
.
