Description
This
photograph
shows
the
mud
and
debris
left
by the
1913
flood
in
front
of
Elder
and
Johnston's
Department
Store
in
Dayton
,
Ohio
. A
sign
outside
the
store
reads
"
Open
For
Business
In
All
Departments.
" The
photograph
measures
8
"
x

"
(20.32
x
25.40
cm)
. In the
late
1800s
Thomas
Elder
opened
his
department
store
on
Fourth
and
Main
Streets
in
downtown
Dayton
.
It
was
one
of the
first
department
stores
in the
city
.
Elder
later
merged
with
Dayton's
Beerman's
for
Bargains
in
1962
,
creating
Elder-Beerman
. The
March
1913
flood
was a
natural
disaster
unparalleled
in the
history
of the
Miami
Valley
region
.
Within
a
three-day
period
,
eight
to
eleven
inches
of
rainfall
fell
throughout
the
Great
Miami
River
Basin
Watershed
. This
rainfall
,
coupled
with
frozen
ground
,
produced
over
90
percent
runoff
and
caused
the
Great
Miami
River
and its
tributary
streams
to
overflow
.
Consequently
,
every
city
along
the
river
was
inundated
with
floodwaters
. The
amount
of
water
that
passed
through
the
river
channel
in
Dayton
equaled
the
amount
of
water
that
flows
over
Niagara
Falls
in a
30-day
period
. The
cost
of this
tragic
event
was
extremely
high
.
Over
360
people
lost
their
lives
and
property
damage
exceeded
$100,000,000
.
