Leaning

Rocks
Cemeteries
Place
Springfield (Ohio)
Clark County (Ohio)
Description
This
photograph
shows
an
outcropping
known
as
Leaning
Rock
in
Springfield
,
Ohio's
Fern
Cliff
Cemetery
.
Buck
Creek
runs
along
the
southern
edge
of the
cemetery
. This
southern
part
of the
cemetery
,
inside
the
Plum
Street
entrance
, was
once
known
as the "
Devil's
Half
Acre
"
because
of the
wildness
of the
area
.
Lying
alongside
one
of the
cemetery
roads
is
a
huge
rock
that
once
fell
from the
cliffs
behind
. There are
two
American
Indian
legends
attached
to
Leaning
Rock
, or
Weeping
Rock
as
it
is
also
called
. In
one
version
, an
Indian
girl
,
daughter
of the
chief
of the
Piqua
tribe
of the
Shawnee
, was
chosen
to
carry
three
sacred
objects
north
to the
headquarters
of the
Indian
Confederation
for
safekeeping
. As she
entered
the "
Devil's
Half
Acre
" a
violent
storm
erupted
and the
girl
took
shelter
beneath
the
cliffs
. The
Leaning
Rock
was
split
from the
cliff
above
and
buried
the
girl
and the
objects
she was
carrying
. The
other
Indian
legend
revolves
around
the
love
of
two
heavenly
guardians
sent
to
earth
by the
great
Manitou
;
Jess-a-bo
ruled
the
deer
and
elk
and his
spouse
,
Le-Le-no
,
ruled
the
winged
creatures
. The
bad
spirit
,
Gen-an-da
, was
jealous
of their
love
and
urged
the
tortoise
who
carried
the
world
on his
back
to
shake
the
earth
. He
did
and
Jess-a-bo
was
knocked
senseless
while
Le-Le-no
was
buried
beneath
a
great
rock
.
When
Jess-a-bo
came
to and
looked
for
Le-Le-no
he
found
the
rock
from
which
his
wife's
tears
welled
.
Jess-a-bo
fled
from
Gen-an-da
and was
reunited
with
Le-Le-no
at the
Island
of the
Souls
because
they had
remained
true
to
one
another
, but the
soul
of
Le-Le-no
still
weeps
and the
stone
is
always
covered
with her "
tears.
" This
photograph
is
from the
book
Springfield
Illustrated
,
which
provides
a
written
and
photographic
profile
of the
city
. The
photographs
include
residences
of
prominent
citizens
,
schools
,
churches
,
businesses
, and
street
views
. The
book
is
74
pages
and
measures
9
"
x
12.75
"
(22.86
x
32.39
cm)
.
