Street
and
Ferncliff
Avenue
in
Springfield
,
Ohio
.
Springfield
was
growing
rapidly
in
1863
and
it
became
apparent
that the
existing
burial
ground
on
Columbia
Street
and the
Greenmount
Cemetery
on the
east
side
of
town
would not
provide
adequate
space
. The
Springfield
Cemetery
Association
was
formed
and in
September
1863
about
80
acres
of
land
were
purchased
from the
widow
and
heirs
of
Henry
Bechtel
. The
land
was
located
northwest
of the
city
limits
on
West
McCreight
Avenue
overlooking
Buck
Creek
. The
name
Fern
Cliff
was
adopted
on
April
4
,
1864
. A
small
knoll
called
Indian
Hill
was
set
aside
for the
burial
of
Clark
County
soldiers
and
became
known
as
Soldier's
Mound
. In
1869
,
6.5
more
acres
were
purchased
and
became
the
Plum
Street
entranceway
into the
cemetery
along
the
foot
of the
limestone
cliffs
facing
the
creek
. The
archway
entrance
is
no
longer
standing
, but the
stone
wall
curving
off
to the
right
is
still
in
existence
. By
1943
the
cemetery
consisted
of
210
acres
with
more
than
26,000
graves
. In
2003
,
Fern
Cliff
covered
about
250
acres
and
contains
65,970
graves
. This
photograph
is
from the
book
Springfield
Illustrated
,
which
provides
a
written
and
photographic
profile
of the
city
. The
photographs
include
residences
of
prominent
citizens
,
schools
,
churches
,
businesses
, and
street
views
. The
book
is
74
pages
and
measures
9
"
x
12.75
"
(22.86
x

cm)
