photograph
shows
the
residence
of
Guy
D
.
Bayley
,
located
at
1926
Fountain
Boulevard
in
Springfield
,
Ohio
.
Bayley
was a
member
of
one
of
Springfield's
most
prominent
industrial
families
. His
father
,
William
Bayley
,
came
to
Springfield
in
1875
at the
age
of
30
. He
found
work
with the
firm
of
Whiteley
,
Fassler
&
Kelly
,
known
for their
Champion
reapers
.
When
Whiteley's
industrial
empire
folded
due
to
bad
investing
in
1887
,
Bayley
had to
start
all
over
. In
partnership
with his
brother-in-law
,
Bayley
acquired
the
failing
Rogers
Fence
Company
. In
1904
the
firm
was
reorganized
as the
William
Bayley
Company
and
became
one
of
Springfield's
most
successful
companies
.
According
to
Newsweek
magazine's
special
50th
anniversary
issue
in
1983
, '
American
Dream,
'
Bayley
'
held
more
than
100
patents
on
inventions
ranging
from a
gas
engine
to a
tobacco
cutter-and
whatever
else
its
customers
asked
for,
whether
it
appeared
in the
Bayley
catalog
or
not.
'
Bayley
opened
branch
offices
in
New
York
,
Washington
,
Chicago
, and
Atlanta
.
Bayley's
second
son
,
Guy
, was
put
in
charge
of
sales
for the
company
in
late
1920s
.
According
to
Newsweek
,
Guy
D
.
Bayley
was a
sport
who
"
liked
flashy
suits
,
fast
cars
,
fleet
horses
and,
it
was
whispered
, a
tot
of
whiskey
, but, in
one
old
colleague's
recollection
, 'he
could
sell
feathers
when
he had a
mind
to.'
" This
