Description
This
pipe
is
an
effigy
of a
seated
frog
, with
front
legs
abstractly
depicted
in
low
relief
at the
front
of the
pipe
. The
toes
are
indicated
by
incised
lines
at the
bottom
front
of the
pipe
. The
tightly
flexed
back
legs
are
represented
in
low
relief
, with
toes
engraved
along
the
base
or
lowest
edge
of the
pipe
. The
eyes
are in
low
relief
and
darker
in
color
than the
surrounding
stone
, and the
mouth
is
an
incised
line
that
extends
downward
. The
bowl
opening
is
in the
upper
back
and the
connecting
stem
opening
is
in the
frog's
lower
back
.
Most
of the
body
has been
ground
smooth
, but
some
areas
of the
lower
part
of the
effigy
still
show
peck
marks
from the
manufacturing
process
. The
pipe
is
made
of
sandstone
that
is
yellowish
brown
and
brown
in
color
. This
piece
comes
from
Fort
Ancient
Culture
. The
Fort
Ancient
people
were a
late
prehistoric
culture
living
in
southern
Ohio
between
1,100
and
450
years
ago
.
Fort
Ancient
people
were
Ohio's
original
farmers
,
growing
crops
of
corn
,
beans
, and
squash
, and
thrived
in
southern
Ohio
and
northern
Kentucky
.
Villages
were
made
up
of a
number
of
circular
or
rectangular
houses
surrounding
an
open
plaza
. The
Fort
Ancient
people
continued
to
build
small
burial
mounds
, but
gradually
shifted
to
burials
in a
cemetery
area
with
no
mounds
.
