Dear Participant,

We have recently come across a few photographs, newspaper articles and programs relating to President Lincoln's funeral cortege. After Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, his body was sent back to Springfield, Illinois for burial. The attached map traces the 1650 mile route from Washington D.C. to Springfield. Along the way, mourners lined the tracks and special services were held. The train stopped in Cleveland on April 28, where over 100,000 mourners paid their respects, and church bells tolled from eleven to twelve midnight in Piqua in honor of the fallen president.

The route ran (roughly) from Erie, PA to Cleveland, south to Columbus and west to Indianapolis. I can send you a map if you think the procession might have gone through your community. If you have materials relating to the procession, or your community's commemoration of the event, please let us know. Thank you!
